It’s pretty amazing what Browncoats have done in the last 20 years. When Firefly was canceled after one season, fans from all over the world campaigned for more; and they got a movie! When that movie, Serenity, hit theaters in 2005, fans began using the screenings as a way to raise money and awareness for good. Over the years, Can’t Stop The Serenity events have raised over $1,000,000 for Equality Now, and the California Browncoats have raised over $250,000 for a variety of charities! Beyond that, fans have created mountains of fan art, fiction, music, and fan made, unofficial sequels, prequels and other films. We’ve gotten together for shindigs, Back Up Bashes, Balls and Cruises. The history of the Browncoat community is storied, as we have supported our cast and crew, our friends, and our causes. Love has truly kept this fandom in the air, and we believe it will keep us in the air for many more years! Raise a glass of Mudder’s Milk to yourselves, and sing the Ballad of Jayne. (You’re allowed to put your own name in there.)
Our goal for this year is to celebrate our fandom, as well as to celebrate our show, its cast and crew, and the causes they support. Our chosen charity for SDCC is Alan Tudyk and Charissa Barton’s charity One Love Fund “OLF”. You may remember that we raised awareness and funds for them back in 2019, and we felt like something so close to Alan’s heart was a great way to celebrate the love that the show inspired. In the last few years, OLF has been busy supporting other important projects, like Kids In Need Of Defense, LA Foodbank and International Rescue Committee (support for the humanitarian crisis in Yemen). Future projects include raising awareness of Indigenous People’s groups that are leading the charge in climate activism and solutions. Alan donated some signed treasures from his past projects and if you stop by the booth, you can bid on some of them in our silent auction!
While you’re at it, why don’t you come watch Dr. Horrible with us on Friday night (July 22, 9:15 PM to 10:45 PM, Room 6DE) and stay after the show for a few rounds of Dr. H karaoke! This was a big hit in 2019 and it promises to be just as much fun this year. On Sunday (July 24, 1PM to 2PM Grand 10&11, Mariott Marquis), we’re celebrating our Fandom with a screening of the fan film Shadows on the Wind along with a discussion about the power of Browncoat creative endeavors with Jocelyn Fischer (the film’s creator and producer) and Justin Fischer (the film’s writer) and one of our favorite Browncoat fan artists, Nick Kremenek. And speaking of panels, don’t forget that Alan Tudyk has one on Saturday to promote Resident Alien - (Saturday, July 23, 4:15 PM, Indigo Ballroom) - should be fun!
We have new merch at our booth (A7-A8), including con exclusive, limited edition key rings designed by Crafty Like A Monkey, limited edition shadow boxes, Love Keeps Her in the Air patches (from the Kentucky Browncoats!), and a Vera patch! For the first time in a long time, we will also have new shirts! Specifically, California Browncoat T-Shirts Designed by Nick!
Finally, we have two ‘for-charity’ signings - Friday, from 2:00 to 3:00, we will be hosting Nick - we have lots of merch designed by him that you can purchase at our booth or bring something you got from his table! Sunday, from 2:30 to 3:30, we will have David Booher, writer of Firefly: River Run and All New Firefly, both available from Boom! Studios. We will have limited copies of his books available for purchase.
We are thrilled to be back at SDCC (Normal Edition) and back in our old, shiny spot in the exhibitor’s hall, but we are even more excited to be among Browncoats again, connecting with the rest of this passionate and powerful fandom. If you have some time to spare, consider volunteering at our booth. Shifts can be as short as one hour, and we have snacks! Plus, you’re helping us keep this ship in the air! But, even if you can’t volunteer, please come by the booth anyway, say hi, share a story about how the Browncoat community has been there for you or how the show has touched your life. We can’t wait to see you!
