Second Annual Can’t Stop The Serenity Screenings

“Equality is like gravity. We need it to stand on this earth as men and women.” -Joss Whedon

What is Can’t Stop The Serenity?

Can’t Stop The Serenity (CSTS) is a chance for Joss Whedon fans to give him the best birthday present ever, both by celebrating a great movie and raising money for his favorite charity, Equality Now.

Joss has very strong opinions on the rights and status of women in this ‘verse. Equality Now works to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world.  We all love Firefly’s strong female characters and the Serenity movie, so Browncoats are bringing all these aspects together in a night of community fundraising and silver-screen entertainment.  Check the CSTS site for screenings in your area.

What We’re Up To

Charity Events

Other Conventions

Thanks to everyone who came out to San Diego Comic-Con 2011. We couldn’t do it without all your support! Check back here for the final charity amounts.

Stay tuned for news of the CABC at WonderCon 2012!

Who We Are – CABC

California Browncoats is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of the Firefly and Serenity fandom, cast and crew through charitable work. We can be found doing good works at conventions throughout California. Since our inception in June 2007 we have raised over $100,000 for various charities. Some of the charities we’ve raised funds for include Equality Now, Kids Need to Read, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation (MC-LEF), Waterkeeper Alliance and The Al Wooten Center. This site has information on how you can get involved, support our organization and find out more about Firefly and Serenity and its fandom.

Fan Outreach

The California Browncoats, in accordance with our mission, have chosen to create a Fan Outreach program. This program is designed to give fans the means to promote the fandom to those not already involved. It also helps fans to reach out to each other, in the hopes that as we become more connected, we can make the fandom bigger and better. This program has two areas where it is implemented, at conventions and online.

At conventions we feel that as a fan, you should have something available to you that will help promote the fandom. For instance, at the 2007 San Diego Comic-Con, we handed out free Chinese coin necklaces with a business card attached. We also set up dinners for 10 Browncoats at 5 different restaurants so they could have at least one chance to meet others with similar interests in a relaxed setting. We plan to continue with these ideas and more in the future.

Our online program is not yet up and running. It will contain tools available for you to help promote the fandom in your area or online.

If you would like to participate or have suggestions, please send us an email.

Want to Get More Involved?

Event Committee Member
The CABC booths are organized by a committee and every year we seek new committee members to give Browncoats a chance to get more involved. Committee members are reponsible for coordinating the event’s charity fundraiser, promoting our presence at the event, designing the look of the booth, getting volunteers to work at the event, organizing the things we sell, and a number of other ‘behind-the-scenes’ activities that make our booth so popular.

Committee Positions

  • Chairperson – Runs the committee
  • Charity Coordinator – Charity contact, runs fundraiser, finds sponsors
  • Sales Coordinator – Vendor contact, merchandise logistics
  • Fan Outreach – Promotion of the fandom at the event, meeting room, special events
  • Publications – Coordinating creation of all printed matter
  • Promotions – Online posts, press releases, advertising
  • Booth Design – Creates the look of the booth
  • Volunteer Coordinator – Organizes, schedules and main contact for volunteers

The committee works online for months before the event using a Yahoo group. Some of the positions will overlap areas, i.e. the Volunteer Coordinator will write the invitation to volunteer, but the Promotions coordinator will post it online. Each committee member is expected to participate with ideas and in discussions for all areas as it is a collaborative effort.

Some committee positions, such as charity organizer or volunteer coordinator, require your presence at the entire event. However others, like promotions or publications, are positions in which the majority of the work is completed before the event so anyone from around California can participate without having to attend the event. Committee members will be supplied tickets to the event by the California Browncoats as they are expected to be working at least six hours each day.

To become a committee member:

  • Must have volunteered at least six (6) hours total at one or more events
  • Must get a referral from an event chairperson

If you have already volunteered at least six hours at one of our events and are interested in working on a committee please send us an email. Be sure to include which area you are interested in working on.

Event Chairperson
The chairperson heads up the committee and, in conjunction with the California Browncoats Board of Directors, makes all final decisions related to the event.

To become a chairperson:

  • Must have volunteered at least six (6) hours total at one or more events
  • Must have been a committee member of an event
  • Must be recommended by that event’s chairperson

If you are interested in becoming a committee member or an event chairperson, please email us or speak with a Board Member in person.

Volunteer with the California Browncoats

Every year the California Browncoats host booths at WonderCon in San Francisco and Comic-Con in San Diego. Sometimes we also have booths at other conventions in California and for every one of these we need volunteers! As an event grows close we will post a message to our website and also to many local groups asking for volunteers. Simply email us if you want to help out.

We also have a Yahoo group for our volunteers, which is the best way to stay current on what’s going on. Sign up at the group and you will receive updates and all the necessary information for each event we run. Volunteers are responsible for purchasing their own tickets for entrance to each event.

Upcoming Events

Stay tuned for more upcoming events from the California Browncoats.

The California Browncoats can be found at various conventions, screenings, and shindigs throughout California and beyond. We also have an online presence with charity auctions on eBay and, of course, our website with updates, information, and our planned Fan Outreach program.

Current Charity Fundraiser

The Waterkeeper Alliance

The California Browncoats are pleased to announce our charity pick for Comic-Con 2009. We will be raising funds and awareness for The Waterkeeper Alliance, an international grassroots organization advocating to keep pollutants out of our water.

The Waterkeeper Alliance has been supported by several Firefly/Serenity cast members in the past and we are very excited to be working with an organization dedicated to keeping our planet healthy for everyone. Stay tuned to this site to learn what exciting things we have in store for you!

The California Browncoats – Comic-Con 2009 – Keeping Earth That Is from becoming Earth That Was

Charity Summary

A major part of the California Browncoats mission is to raise funds for other non-profit charities. In order to choose the charities, we have a tiered selection process. For each event or fundraiser, we try to enlist the help of a celebrity spokesperson/sponsor from the cast or crew of Firefly or Serenity. The spokesperson/sponsor will choose the charity that receives the funds we raise at that event. We will also run a fundraiser at the behest of a cast or crew member of Firefly or Serenity, such as an eBay auction for a special item. If we do not have a spokesperson/sponsor for a specific event, our Board of Directors will select the charity to receive funds from the event.
