It’s Time for 2017!

Greetings Browncoats!

We’re gearing up for another great year of cons, plus some other fun stuff, and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone at the booths at WonderCon and San Diego Comic Con. We had a good time exhibiting in 2016, and through the generous support of Browncoats everywhere we donated $15,078.71 to our supported charities.

Ronald Earle “Ron” Glass (July 10, 1945 – November 25, 2016)

Ron Glass

Ron Glass passed away in November at the age of 71. In honor of Ron’s life, we’ll be raising money in 2017 for his charity of choice, The Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center. Ron served on their board of directors from 1992 until his death in 2016, 24 years of service to an outstanding organization. You can read more about Ron’s involvement with Al Wooten at www.wootencenter.org/ronglass

2017 Conventions

We’ll be exhibiting at WonderCon Anaheim Comic-Con March 31 – April 02 and Comic-Con International: San Diego July 19 – July 23.

For WonderCon, we’ll be at Booth 1089 in Hall B. We don’t have our booth assignment for SDCC yet, but we anticipate being in the same location as past years (A7/A8).

We’ll be soliciting for volunteers a few weeks before each convention.

Can’t Stop the Serenity

Do you want to run a CSTS event in your city this year? We’d love to help out. We can help with theater deposits, money to buy merchandise, ticket sales, prize donations, and possibly onsite help (depending on where the event is).

The event would be yours to run, we only ask that we get reimbursed for expenses after the event and that ALL proceeds go to Equality Now. If the event ends up being a net loss, we’ll eat the expenses.

Head over to the Can’t Stop the Serenity site, and if it sounds like something you want to do, contact us at info@californiabrowncoats.org.

Amazon Smile

Do you shop at Amazon? Do you like donating money to charity? When you shop at smile.amazon.com and enter California Browncoats Amazon will donate 0.5% of the purchase price.

California Browncoats Organization Changes
Our Board of Directors passed a new set of bylaws for the corporation. One significant change is that the corporation now has members. In the past, the corporation consisted of only Directors. We felt a change was appropriate to allow for new and greater participation in the corporation.
The new bylaws provide for five people, elected by the membership, to serve on the Board of Directors. The Board will then designate corporate officers to run the day to day operations.
While we transition to an organization that has members, membership in the corporation will be by invitation only; our first round of invitations will go out in the next month or so. We’ll share more as we work through this new change.

2016-2017 Board of Directors
During our meeting in December 2016 the following people were elected to serve on the Board of Directors
  • Dwight Bragdon
  • Tabin Mann
  • Rebecca Safier
  • Lorelei Tutt
  • Shawn Tutt

Follow us!

That’s all for now. Hope to see you around the ‘verse. Until then…

California Browncoats Fall Newsletter

Greetings Browncoats!

We’ve got a few things to tell you about, so let’s get started.

Can’t Stop the Serenity Arcata California – CABC is not participating in this one, but we wanted to boost the signal about the Northern California event. The Humboldt Browncoats and HSU Browncoats are teaming up to bring a screening of Serenity to the Arcata Lounge Theater in Arcata, CA on Sunday, September 25th at 5 PM. Check out the event page for more information or to purchase tickets.

Can’t Stop the Serenity Orange County – CABC is teaming up with Socal Browncoats to bring you CSTS-OC 2016. In addition to screening Serenity, CSTS-OC 2016 will also include a cosplay contest, prize drawings, and an auction of shiny items. CSTS-OC will be held on Oct 8th at 2:15 PM in Irvine, CA. Get your tickets here.

WonderCon 2016 – As usual, CABC exhibited at WonderCon. This year’s event was held in Los Angeles and we had a great time raising money for FIDA Ethiopia. Through sales of merchandise and the generous donations of Browncoats, we brought in $2,200 for this worthwhile charity.

SDCC 2016 – Also per usual, CABC claimed our regular spot in the vast exhibitor hall of San Diego Comic Con. Folks bought up a bunch of our amazing $5.00 fleece sweatshirts and mystery prize bags. We also held our usual daily prize drawings for some great Browncoat stuff. At the end of the con, we raised $3000 for Child’s Play, a charity that seeks to improve the lives of children in hospitals and domestic violence shelters through the generosity and kindness of the video game industry and the power of play.

Amazon Smile – Remember, when you shop at smile.amazon.com, Amazon will donate .5% of the purchase price to CABC.

We hope to see you at WonderCon and SDCC 2017!

San Diego Comic-Con 2016

California Browncoats will be at booth A-07/A-08, which is in the back of Hall A.

We want you!

For those attending SDCC 2016 and wanting to help out at the booth, the volunteer form is now available here. From setting up to tearing down, and everything in between, exhibiting at SDCC requires a lot of people and we can’t get it accomplished without volunteers. If you’ll be at SDCC please consider donating a few hours of your time to help us raise funds for worthwhile charities. WE’LL HAVE SNACKS!

  • Shifts are one hour each, with the exception of the first and last shifts of the day, which are 1.5 hours.
  • No experience necessary. We’ll show you where all the merchandise is, show you how to work the charity games, and, most importantly, show you where the snacks are.
  • We have two “sides” to the booth, sales and charity. Sales folk obtain merchandise for customers, answer questions, and exchange the merchandise for cashy money (or credit cards, we take those too). Charity side solicits donations and runs the prize drawing.
  • If we get a celebrity signer, you may be asked to manage the line. But only if you’re comfortable with that sort of thing.
  • Volunteers get discounts on booth merchandise.

We need to have everyone’s submissions in by 6PM PST on Wednesday July 13th, 2016.

Child’s Play

CABC will be raising money for Child’s Play during SDCC2016. Child’s Play seeks to improve the lives of children in hospitals and domestic violence shelters through the generosity and kindness of the video game industry and the power of play.
We’ll be running our prize drawing and will do two drawings per day, Thursday – Sunday. Then, we’ll throw all of the tickets back in the bucket and draw one grand prize winner. So each ticket gives you three chances to win. Lots of great stuff, including autographed books, messenger bags, pint glasses, buttons, and other stuff.

Chance Bags

We’re going to try something new this year and sell tee shirt grab bags. We’ll put a shirt in a bag along with a prize. You tell us what size shirt you want and whether you want men’s or women’s cut. We’ve got a bunch of stuff to give away, including the hard to find Spectrum Comic from Free Comic Book Day. We’ve got six of them, and they’re signed by Alan Tudyk, P.J. Haarsma, and Shannon Denton. Chance bags will sell for $15.00, including tax.

WonderCon 2016 – Volunteer Information and Charity Fundraiser

California Browncoats will be at booth 2362.

We want you!

For those attending WonderCon 2016 and wanting to help out at the booth, the volunteer form is now available here. From setting up to tearing down, and everything in between, exhibiting at WonderCon requires a lot of people and we can’t get it down without volunteers. If you’ll be at WonderCon please consider donating a few hours of your time to help us raise funds for worthwhile charities. WE’LL HAVE SNACKS!

  • The first shift of each day is a two hour shift. One of our board members will get you into the convention on a setup badge, you’ll help do the daily setup, and then work the first hour that the floor is open. We’ll coordinate a meeting place for those selected to work that first shift.
  • The last shift of the day is normally only 30 minutes, as they kick anyone without an exhibitor badge out at closing time.
  • No experience necessary. We’ll show you where all the merchandise is, teach you how to work the register, show you how to work the charity games, and, most importantly, show you where the snacks are.
  • We have two “sides” to the booth, sales and charity. Sales folk obtain merchandise for customers, answer questions, and exchange the merchandise for cashy money (or credit cards, we take those too). Charity side solicits donations and runs any charity games that we’ll be playing, like the chopstick pull or photo scavenger hunt.
  • If we get a celebrity signer, you may be asked to manage the line. But only if you’re comfortable with that sort of thing.
  • Volunteers get discounts on booth merchandise.

We need to have everyone’s submissions in by 11PM PST on March 18th, 2016.

CABC 2016 WonderCon Fundraiser

As we do at all conventions, CABC will be raising funds for a charity during WonderCon 2016. This year, we’re going to run a concurrent online campaign. Since our incorporation in 2007, CABC has raised over $204,000 for various charities. 100% of the funds raised via this online campaign will be donated to a charity chosen by the board directors and suggested by a cast or crew member of Firefly or Serenity. WonderCon 2015

Greetings Browncoats!

WonderCon 2015 was held April 3-5 in Anaheim, CA. As usual, we had a great time running the booth, meeting all the awesome Browncoats, and raising money for a worthwhile cause.

20150403_113101

For WonderCon 2015, we raised funds for The Trevor Project, the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people ages 13-24. Thanks to the support of everyone who stopped by and donated, we were able to send $2,279.38 to help support their mission.

Can’t Stop the Serenity Orange County 2014

Can’t Stop the Serenity-Orange County 2014 presented SERENITY and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, with a live auction and prize drawings on Saturday, Sept. 20 and raised $1352.47 for Equality Now!

The event, now in its seventh year, was well attended by over 100 people and a great time was had by all. Lots of folks worked behind the scenes and at the actual event, but it’s all thanks to the people that attend that we are able to raise funds for this great charity.

CSTS OC is a team effort between CA Browncoats and SOCAL Browncoats and was, once again, expertly coordinated by Dawn.

Everyone involved would like to thank the following organizations/people for their generous support:

The venue, Starplex Cinemas Woodbridge Movies 5 is a great theater in Irvine, CA where, as usual, we were treated very well (thanks especially to John). Starplex HQ worked with us to make the event most cost effective and maximize our donation (Thanks Starplex!)  If you want to catch a movie for a great price, you should give them a visit at 4626 Barranca Pkwy, Irvine 92604.

San Diego Comic-Con 2014

Browncoats were once again mighty at San Diego Comic-Con International 2014. With your help, the direct donations totaled $1,681 for Kids Need to Read! They get that no matter what, plus, once our end-of-year accounting and con proceeds are figured, we’ll be able to send them a shiny check.

We started setup on Tuesday this year, and the extra day was really nice. In the past, we’ve had to watch the clock on Wed and were sometimes still finishing last minute preparation as preview night kicked off; this year we got done in plenty of time and were ready for what the con had to throw at us.

Wednesday preview night kicked off with brisk sales and lots of folks stopping by to enter our charity prize drawing. We had some really cool prizes this year; congrats to all the winners!

On Thursday, we had some Browncoat-friendly visitors at our booth. Nancy Holder signed some books for fans, and Jenna Busch came by to chat about Legion of Leia and some of her other projects. Then, in the evening, we held our annual screening of Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog with the semi-famous costume contest. Thanks to everyone who attended, entered the costume contest, and congrats to the winners. One thing brought to our attention was pictures (or a lack thereof). Next year we’ll designate an official photographer and do a better job of capturing the moment.

On Friday, Jane Espenson made an appearance to talk about her work on Firefly, and she brought along Eli Gonda, director of her current project, Husbands.

On Saturday, Michele Boyd joined us at the booth to promote her new show, Geek Cred, and she was joined by cast members Damion Poitier and Miley Yamamoto. Later, Dylan Hay-Chapman, graphic designer for Firefly and creator of some of the iconic logos from the show, and Timothy Earls, designer of our shiny ship Serenity, came by the booth to talk to fans and sign stuff.

On Sunday, our friend Seanan McGuire (AKA Mira Grant) stopped by the booth to chat with fans about her work, including the amazing San Diego 2014: The Last Stand of the California Browncoats.

Also on Sunday, Marian Call made a short appearance at the booth and then led everyone outside for a short performance.

Lastly, we held our annual Browncoat Meeting Room and the demand far outstripped the supply of seats. Our apologies to those that did not get into the room; we’ve provided feedback to the Comic-Con staff and hopefully they’ll put us in a bigger room next year. Because of a technical glitch (as in, we forgot to bring pens), we skipped trivia bingo and just asked random trivia questions to random people. It was all very random. Graphic designer Dylan Hay-Chapman, designer of the Blue Sun logo among other things, was on hand to talk about behind the scenes stuff and answer questions about our beloved show. QMx was there and brought exciting news about the new Firefly Online game. See more about the game at https://keepflying.com/.

Once again, thanks to everyone who stopped by to to buy stuff, enter our prize drawing, or just say hello. We couldn’t do what we do without our fellow Browncoats. And a special thanks to all the folks who make the time to come to our booth to do signings, we really appreciate the support!

And another special thanks to all of the amazing volunteers that worked shifts at the booth, helped with setup and tear down, worked the Dr. H screening, or any of the other things we ask our volunteers to do. If you want to help out at a future event, please visit our Get Involved page for information.

The Box Scene Project is launching their Mirror Scholarship & Fellowship, commemorating BAYCAT’s 10 Years Bold Anniversary, and spotlighting LGBT artists and actors to bring attention to the impact and importance of LGBT media representation.

The benefit will feature a one-hour panel & Q&A featuring LGBT actors and creators, Lea DeLaria (OITNB, Broadway), Amy Fox (The Switch), Sean Maher (Firefly, Serenity), Crissle West (The Read), Julie Vu (The Switch), and more. Comic-Con 2014

The California Browncoats will be returning to Comic-Con International in July. We’ll be carrying our usual awesome selection of Browncoat merchandise at the booth, and will also host some games to help us raise money for charity. We’ve got some new stuff this year, including a new pint glass, so make sure you stop by.

We’re putting the final touches on our prize packs for the daily prize drawing. Three chances to win every day, plus everyone is entered into the grand prize drawing. We’ll also have prizes for our charity BINGO game on Sunday in the meeting room, and for the Dr. Horrible costume contest during the Dr. Horrible screening on Thursday. Follow us on twitter at for chances to win more stuff throughout the convention.

We’ll be at tables A-07/A-08, same place we’ve been for the last few years, in the back, right hand corner of the exhibit hall.

Stop by and join us at our panels (information subject to change pending publication of the SDCC guide):

3:00-4:00pm Browncoats Meet-up Stop by the meeting room this year to hang out with Browncoats and likely hear some news from around the ‘verse. Wear a cunning hat. Who knows what could happen? Dylan Hay-Chapman, the graphic designer who did the Blue Sun logo, Jayne’s shirts, flags, and other items from Firefly, will be at the meeting room.

California Browncoats, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non profit charity organization. All of the people planning the event and running the booth and panels are unpaid volunteers. We are proud to continue our efforts to raise money for worthwhile charities. Since our inception in 2007, we have donated over $164,000 to various charity organizations.

WonderCon 2014

California Browncoats exhibited again at the WonderCon 2014 convention in Anaheim, CA. We had a great time meeting fellow Browncoats, playing charity games, and raising money for Kids Need to Read.

The team arrived at the convention center Thursday afternoon for setup day. This was our second year exhibiting in a corner booth instead of our regular fan table space and the WonderCon staff set us up in a great location. We managed to get most of the booth set up before they kicked us out at nine and we returned early Friday morning to complete the job.

It’s always fun to see the booth space transform from a 10X10 area with nothing in it to our home for the next three days.  After working out a couple of logistical issues, we were ready for business!

Can’t Stop the Serenity-Orange County 2013

We want to make sure to give a big Browncoat THANK YOU for the generosity of several donors to the “Can’t Stop the Serenity-Orange County 2013” event held last fall.

Will and Holly of Alakazam Comics [http://www.alakazamcomics.com/] are big Browncoats, and have been generous supporters of CSTS-OC for years, helping publicize the event, and making donations for auction and/or drawings.  This year was no exception.  In addition to lots of promoting of CSTS-OC, they once more donated items for the drawings, including a complete set of the Serenity Collectible Trading Card Set.   Alakazam Comics is located in Irvine across from UCI in the University Center on Campus Dr.  They are not far from the Trader Joe’s.

The Fallen Stars, SoCal rockband led by Browncoats Tracy and Bobbo, donated their wonderful (and rockin’) performance of music from their Firefly-inspired “Leaves on the Wind” project, the first EP of which launched at CSTS-OC.  They donated proceeds from sales of their EP as well.  Check out their website where you can listen to their music, and name your own price to download their songs.  You can also find out about upcoming shows.

Matt Stevens of Geekograph.com [http://www.geekograph.com/] has been extremely generous to CABC, donating pieces of his beautiful laser-etched metal art in support of our charity fundraising efforts, and he came through again for CSTS-OC.  Geekograph.com donated a full set of the new, literally shiny, Firefly bookmarks (each featuring one character plus an image of the 10th character, Serenity), as well as the large scale (24″ x 12″) “Hero of Canton Jayne Cobb and Crew Limited Edition Metal Art”.  Lots of lucky Browncoats took home a piece (or two) won in the auction, or from the prize drawings.

Chris Thorne of the Write Brothers, Inc. [http://www.write-bros.com/], Academy Award winners and innovators of writing software for more than 30 years, reached out to CABC to generously donate valuable software for prize drawings.  Two lucky winners took home one copy each of acclaimed programs “Movie Magic Screenwriter” and “Dramatica Story Expert”–a writer’s jackpot!

The CSTS Global sponsors also provided a wide array of lovely items used in the prize drawings.  A full list of them is at http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/  Thanks!

January 2014 Information

Greetings from The California Browncoats!

It’s been awhile since we put out a newsletter, and we’ve got quite a bit of information to share. So let’s get to it…

Can’t Stop the Serenity Orange County

CSTS-OC was a big success. A sold out crowd of fans got together at the Starplex Woodbridge in Irvine CA to hear some live music from The Fallen Stars; watch our favorite movie, Serenity; and see the “Out of Gas” episode of Firefly. Despite some technical difficulties getting “Out of Gas” on the screen (it got done, just took some extra time), everyone had fun and we raised over $3500.00 for Equality Now.

Long Beach Comic and Horror Convention

For the 2nd year in a row CABC exhibited at LBCC in Long Beach, CA. Crowds were sparse and sales were light, but we still had fun playing our Browncoat trivia game, hosting Nancy Holder and Michele Boyd, and raising a few dollars for Equality Now.

Annual Board Meeting

CABC held its annual board meeting in November and we are pleased to announce the board of directors for the 2013-2014 year:

  • President: Dwight Bragdon
  • Treasurer: Shawn Tutt
  • Secretary: Rebecca Safier
  • Director: Ido Carmel
  • Director: Tabin Mann
  • Director: Vanessa Singleton

SDCC Report and Upcoming Events!

San Diego Comic-Con 2013!

San Diego Comic-Con 2013 was a success! We had a great time talking to everyone who came to our booth. Some of them were new fans and some were familiar faces but everyone helped raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. In total we raised $2,362.76 in donations from you guys, proceeds from our merchandise will be added to that total at the end of the year.

 Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog

This year was the 5th anniversary of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog. We know, we can’t believe it’s been five years already either! Felicia Day recorded us a sweet and funny video reminiscing about her Dr. H days and thanking the fans for their continued interest in Dr. Horrible.

horrible

Our costume contest had four categories: Dr. Horrible, Penny, Captain Hammer, and others (ELE members, groupies, Bad Horse Choir). We also had a special category for children dressed up at Dr. Horrible characters.

Signings

sign2 sign1

We had quite a few signers at our booth this year. Our first signers for the convention were the wonderful Jane Espenson and Brad Bell. We were selling copies of the Husbands graphic novel that they both co-wrote. Other signers were Camden Toy, Sandeep Parikh, Michelle Boyd, Seanan Mcguire, Belle Holder, Jose Molina, and Marian Call. All signers asked that, instead of giving money to them, the fans donate what they could to St. Jude.

Can’t Stop The Serenity: Orange County

CSTS OC triple circle logo white EN -1 copy

We mentioned in the last newsletter that Can’t Stop the Serenity: Orange County is set for Saturday, Sept. 21 but now we have a few more details! The big news is that we will be screening Firefly episode “Out of Gas”!  We are very excited that we are able to show it at our CSTS with permission from Twentieth Century Fox.   We will also have live music from The Fallen Stars, a SoCal band just back from a tour of Europe whose work includes Firefly inspired music.  There will be an auction and door prizes as well.

It all starts at 7:00 pm at Starplex Woodbridge Movies 5. Tickets ($15) are on sale now through the event webpage and donations are also gratefully accepted to benefit Equality Now.

Just a reminder that if you are interested in putting on a CSTS event in your town California Browncoats is happy to help and sponsor your event. If you are interested, please email info@californiabrowncoats.org

Long Beach Comic-Con

We will be exhibiting at Long Beach Comic-Con for the second time. This year the convention is November 23rd & 24th at Long Beach Convention Center. Tickets for the weekend are only $40 and can be purchased at the LBCC website. We will have our usual assortment of Firefly related books, shirts, and knick-knacks.

We Want You!

We wouldn’t be able to do everything we need to without volunteers. If you are interested in helping us out during a convention or another California Browncoats event please head over to our volunteerYahoo group to keep up with volunteer announcements. You don’t need a Yahoo account or need to join the group to see the messages.

Can’t Stop the Serenity – Orange County 2013

CSTS

Starplex Woodbridge Movies 5
4626 Barranca Parkway  Irvine, CA  92604

Please join us for our charity screening event to benefit Equality Now featuring

Firefly episode “Out of Gas”

and Joss Whedon’s Serenity

Yes, you read that correctly.  We are thrilled that this year’s Can’t Stop the Serenity-Orange County (CSTS-OC) will include a screening of the Firefly episode “Out of Gas”!!!  This is a very rare opportunity to see Firefly on the big screen, and this episode is the one Joss Whedon has often said is his favorite!    Of course we will also be screening Serenity (Joss Whedon’s first feature film, also known as the Big Damn Movie).

On top of that, we will have live music from The Fallen Stars, a Southern California band fresh off a European tour, whose work includes several great songs inspired by Firefly (visit their website to hear songs, watch videos, and learn about the band).  We will also have a live auction and door prizes, and shiny merchandise for sale!  And all of this fun feels even better because it benefits Equality Now.

Tickets are $15 each.  Advance ticket sales are now closed. Tickets will be sold at our table in the lobby (not at the theater box office), while supply lasts. If you have already purchased your tickets, you may pick them up at our table in the lobby of the theater (not the box office).

If you are not able to attend, but would like to support our cause, we would welcome a donation in any amount (just click on the Donate button).  Thank you so much!

More information:

All proceeds of CSTS-OC will go to Equality Now, whose mission is to work for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women and girls around the world.   Working with grassroots women’s and human rights organizations and individual activists since 1992, Equality Now documents violence and discrimination against women and mobilizes international action to support efforts to stop these abuses.  Equality Now is rated 4 stars by Charity Navigator.

“Browncoats” are fans of the television show Firefly (2002, created by Joss Whedon) and the movie Serenity (2005), which continues the Firefly universe in a feature film (Joss Whedon’s first).  Can’t Stop the Serenity is an annual worldwide charity screenings event in which dozens of locations around the world host screenings of Serenity to raise money for Equality Now.  Can’t Stop the Serenity first launched in 2006 and since then has raised more than $800,000 for Equality Now.  You do not have to be a Browncoat to have a great time at Can’t Stop the Serenity!  Each year, while most of the attendees of CSTS-OC are Browncoats, there are always quite a few folks new to Firefly or Serenity who come on out and have a great time.

Starplex Woodbridge Movies 5 is a wonderful venue for CSTS-OC!  They always treat us so well!  And bonus: Parking is free at the shopping center.  The theater has a full service concession stand with popcorn, drinks, $1 hot dogs, candy, nachos, etc.

CSTS-OC is presented with the generous support of the California Browncoats, Inc., a registered 501(c)3 non-profit, in association with the Southern California BrowncoatsFirefly episode “Out of Gas” appears with permission from Twentieth Century Fox.

Win Shiny Prizes at WonderCon 2013

The California Browncoats will be running two games during WonderCon 2013 and giving folk a chance to win some really cool stuff.

We will have a prize drawing game each day of the convention, with three prize packs being awarded each day. Some of the shiny stuff you could win by entering our prize drawing include:

The Malcolm Reynolds Metal-Plated Pistol Replica. Produced by QMx, this replica was created using a mold of the original stunt pistol carried by Nathan Fillion. And because we love our fellow Browncoats so much, we’re giving away two of these bad boys!

An awesome Serenity ornament. These things are pretty cool in their own right, but we got a few people to autograph the box for you. Signatures on this include Jane Espenson, Ron Glass, Sean Maher, Yan & Rafael Feldman (Fanty/Mingo),  Morena Baccarin,  Jewel Staite,  Adam Baldwin,  Will Conrad,  Shawna Trpcic, Alan Tudyk, Brett Matthews, Nathan Fillion, Mark Sheppard, Jose Molina, and Ben Edlund.

Plus some other stuff to round out the prize packages.

We will also be hosting a trivia game. Test your knowledge of Firefly and Serenity. The rules are simple: We’ll ask you a trivia question, if you get it right, you get to pick something from our bucket of prizes. Get it wrong, and you get the good feeling of donating to Equality Now. Some of the prizes for the trivia contest include:

Autographed headshots from Firefly/Serenity and other cool SciFi shows
St Jude collectible mugs
Limited edition 57th Overlanders Dog Tags
T-Shirts
Amazon gift cards
Comics and books
And other shiny goodness

So, if you’re attending WonderCon please stop by Booth 1286 in Hall B. All proceeds will go to Equality Now.

SDCC2012

Assuming control of tables A7/A8 in the San Diego Convention Center, The California Browncoats hit the ground running for another great con and the ten year anniversary of our favorite show. Continuing what we started at WonderCon 2012, we once again focused our support on The Trevor Project, the charity chosen by Sean Maher and Jane Espenson. The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth, and we were honored to raise $8,000 for this worthwhile cause!

After spending a few months preparing (including a pretty solid weekend right before the con), the Browncoats hit the convention floor in force bright and early on Wednesday morning to build our outpost. It takes a lot of time and effort to build our booth, and it’s always amazing to watch the progress from two tables and an empty backdrop into the finished product. Thanks to all the volunteers who came and helped out, we couldn’t get it done without you.

Preview night was a resounding success and set the tone for the remainder of the con. Based on the traffic during preview night, we figured we were going to have a busy convention and the attendees did not disappoint.

On Thursday, we hosted signings by Adam Levermore, Jamie Chambers, and Team Unicorn reported for our first signings of the convention. Lots of folks stopped by to visit and everyone had a lot of fun chatting with them.

We hosted some after hours fun on Thursday with our screening of Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog. Before the screening, we held a costume contest judged by Shawna Trpcic, the costume designer from the show. You can see some video of the event at http://youtu.be/4tnyxz8HEys

Although not an official signer this year, Mark Sheppard stopped by the booth for a few minutes and then sent people to the booth to make donations throughout the rest of the convention. Thanks Mark!

On Saturday, Tim Minear, Shawna Trpcic, and Jane Espenson all stopped by the booth to meet fans and sign stuff. We had a lot of fun listening to stories about Firefly and projects that they are all working on now.

Later on Saturday, our good friend Marian Call stopped by the booth to meet fans, sell CDs, and sign stuff. She then turned around and donated 100% of her CD sales at the booth to charity! How cool is that?

On Sunday, NY Times best selling writer Mira Grant (AKA Seanan McGuire) signed and gave away tons of books. If you haven’t checked out San Diego 2014: The Last Stand of the California Browncoats, you really should.

In all, CABC raised and donated the following amounts to these super charities:

The Trevor Project – $8,000.00
Equality Now – $2,500
St. Jude’s – $500.00
Kids Need to Read – $500.00

Next up: Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo, September 15th-16th, Los Angeles Convention Center. If you’re planning on attending and are interested in helping us out, drop a line to volunteer@californiabrowncoats.org and let us know. We can use help setting up, tearing down, and running the booth for both days of the convention.

Hope to see many of you again at SDCC 2013!

Over $11,000 Raised During San Diego Comic Con 2012

Equality Now $2,500
St. Jude’s $500.00
Kids Need to Read $500.00

The volunteer form is up and active at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEdaVTdQT21ZVmg2R0k1U0pEZWkzQ2c6MQ#gid=0

We know that some folks want to volunteer but do not know their con schedules yet. Don’t worry, the form will stay up until after Comic Con has posted the con schedule.

CA Browncoats relies on volunteers to work the booth. You’ll have fun, and you never know who will end up stopping by.

If you’re interested in volunteering, please fill out the form at the above link. We try to get the schedule out about a week before the con, depending on when Comic Con posts their schedule.

Don’t worry if you’ve never worked at something like this in the past, we’ll show you the ropes and we always try to pair new folks up with people that have worked the booth a few times.

Please note: This is NOT a form to volunteer to work for Comic Con International. That is a completely separate process, and the registration to volunteer to work for Comic Con International is closed. This is for folks who have a ticket to Comic Con and are interested in helping us raise money for charity.

    Wondercon 2012

The California Browncoats will be running fan tables at WonderCon 2012 in Anaheim, CA in March. While we will certainly miss our annual appearance in the Bay Area, we look forward to meeting new friends at the Anaheim Convention Center. Hopefully the construction on the Moscone Center in San Francisco will make for an even greater WonderCon in 2013!

We will be fundraising for The Trevor Project, the charity selected by Sean Maher. The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth. We are currently working out plans for Sean to stop by our booth sometime during the convention. Be sure to follow our Twitter feed (@CABrowncoats) for the latest updates.

Wondercon 2012 will once again feature the ever popular chopstick pull game. Pull a pair of chopsticks out of the treasure box, if you pull a winning pair pick a prize from some great stuff. Even if you don’t pick a winner, you get to keep the chopsticks.

CABC has teamed up with some great musicians to offer some neat Whedon themed music in a pretty cool format. Keep up with on our website, twitter feed, or Facebook page for more details.

    Hope to see you there!

Be a Part of the Zombie Apocalypse!

Tuckerize: The use of a person’s name or description in an original story. Term is derived from Wilson Tucker who made a practice of using his friends’ names for minor characters in the stories.

Mira Grant (aka Seanan McGuire, NY Times bestselling author and winner of the 2010 John W. Campbell Award for best new writer) has offered to “Tuckerize” two (2) undead winners in her upcoming novella “San Diego 2014: The Final stand of the California Browncoats”

The two (2) spots will be auctioned off via eBay in order to raise money for Equality Now. There will be TWO auctions! The first auction starts November 15th and ends November 25th.  The second auction starts November 20th and ends on November 30th.

Keep an eye out here and on CABC’s Twitter.

The first auction is at Tuckerization Auction 1.

The second auction is at Tuckerization Auction 2.

    Tuckerization rules:

    • The name of the recipient of the Tuckerization will be used in the story. In the case of a highly recognizable name, or a name that the recipient would prefer not to be used in fiction, an agreed-upon alternative may be used.
    • The basic physical apperance of the recipient will be used in the story
    • Unless the recipient specifically requests a villainous arc, they will be presented positively by the author
    • Because this is a zombie story, there are no guarentees made as to the survival of any character, whether or not they are based on a living person. the recipient can make suggestions as to the nature of their character’s death, but these may or may not be used.
    • Only willing participants will be written into the story. you can bid on a tuckerization for a friend only if that friend consents to the terms above. you cannot use a tuckerization to kill off an enemy.
    • In the event that San Diego 2014 is published in a physical format, the author will provide the California Browncoats with two (2) copies of the finished book, to be delivered to the recipients of the Tuckerizations at the organizations’s discretion.

    2011 San Diego Comic-Con Exclusives

Comic-Con is the biggest geek gathering in America and every year we try to give you something special for stopping by the Browncoat booth and donating to charity. This year, we’re going to have two all new exclusives!

    Shiny! Pint Glass

First up is our shiny new pint glass. Literally. Produced by the California Browncoats in a very limited run, you can get this exclusive 15 oz. pint glass for a $8.00 donation to The Dyslexia Foundation. The Dyslexia Foundation is supported by Jewel Staite, and we felt this particular item would remind you both of her, and our favorite Firefly mechanic, Kaylee. Get yours quick, there are only 99 available.

    Shiny!

    Firefrog Print

Our next exclusive is an out of this world mash-up. Recent Browncoat and Relentlessly Cheerful Artist James Hance has done this awesome Firefrog print just for Comic-Con. It features your favorite Firefly class ship Serenity and its crew mashed into the Muppet world. This 8×10 heavy cardstock print is limited to only 200 copies and can be yours for a $10.00 donation. We’re going to send 100% of that donation split equally to all 5 charities we are supporting at Comic-Con this year. That means you can walk away with a cool exclusive and $2.00 will go to each of this year’s charities: Equality Now, Kids Need to Read, Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation, The Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center, and The Dyslexia Foundation. That makes this a win-win situation, and we all know Mal…er…Kermit…uh…The Captain likes to win!

    Firefrog

These exclusives won’t stick around long, and when they’re gone, there won’t be any more produced. Hurry on over to tables A7/A8 and get yours!

Freeman and the ComiCenter crew will have multiple cameras to capture every moment. There will also be footage from around the event and interviews with attendees. A huge thank you to ComiCenter Live who are donating all their services, time and crew to make this live stream possible.

2011 CSTS Los Angeles Logo and Shirts

Can’t Stop the Serenity Los Angeles is going to be a special night, so we felt something extra was needed for all fans, attending or not. We are honored to have popular graphic artist Adam Levermore design the CSTS LA Logo. You can now purchase shirts, mugs, bags, buttons, magnets, and more featuring this art. Even if you aren’t going to the event, you can show your support by buying one of these products. We are sending 100% of the profits from all sales of this design to Equality Now.

But act quickly! We will only have them on sale until June 30th, 2011!

Note: This is the only way to get these shirts. We will not have them for sale at the event itself. We will only have buttons and magnets with this logo for sale at the event.

Note #2: We will have a very limited quantity of the Global CSTS Men’s and Women’s shirts available at the screening.

All profits from the sales of these products through June 30th will be counted in the total raised for the CSTS Los Angeles Event.

2011 Can’t Stop the Serenity Los Angeles

The California Browncoats present a SoCal Browncoats Can’t Stop the Serenity Event

Final Update: We are proud to announce that CSTS Los Angeles raised $11,000 for Equality Now.  The actual amount raised after expenses was just under $11,000, so the California Browncoats board added the last bit to get to a nice round number.  A huge thank you to all the hard work of our volunteers, to our tireless and inspiring lead organizer Therese Magnani, to all the attendees and their generous donations, to ComicCenter for broadcasting the event, to all our wonderful sponsors, and to the special guests who spent time with us that night. See you next year!

    Can’t Stop the Serenity at Comic-Con 2010

The California Browncoats are once again taking part in the Can’t Stop the Serenity worldwide charity event. 2010 is a special year, the milestone 5th year of CSTS! To celebrate, CABC decided to host a CSTS event during the largest pop culture event in America: San Diego Comic-Con.

This also serves as a celebration of other milestones and anniversaries close to Browncoats and CABC. 5 years ago at Comic-Con, Joss Whedon screened a completed Serenity for the first time, a mere 2 days after it was finished. 2005 also saw the first Browncoat presence at Comic-Con. That year, Browncoats from across California helped to raise over $12,000 for Equality Now. As part of our Year of Equality Now, the California Browncoats are proud to host the San Diego Can’t Stop the Serenity event to benefit Equality Now.

And so, we present the details and ticket purchasing information you need:

One of a Kind Mal Holster Prop Replica Auction for ALS

The California Browncoats are proud to give you the chance to win a very special one of a kind item:

A Firefly Replica Captain Malcom Reynolds Hero Holster by Brennan Byers of gbb Custom Leather

The lucky winner of this auction will own a very unique piece of Firefly history. This holster is the hand made custom prop replica prototype created by master leather craftsman Brennan Byers of gbb Custom Leather. It is made from the exact pattern as the holster that is worn by none other than Nathan “Captain Malcolm Reynolds” Fillion in the television series Firefly. This prototype was created as an example for a limited and numbered series being done by gbb Custom Leather. It is the only holster besides the one used in the series that will not be numbered. Brennan explained that the holster Mal wears looks slightly different because the studio wanted it aged and this prototype is in new/unused condition.

Brennan was impressed with the charity work that CABC was doing at last year’s Creation Convention and donated this fantastic item to us at the end of the convention, with the request that we use it to raise funds for charity. Specifically, Brennan requested that the CABC auction this holster to raise funds toward curing Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as ‘Lou Gehrig’s Disease’ – in his own words earlier this year:

“A very old and dear friend, Harry Adronis, who is well known in the industry, was diagnosed with A.L.S. a few months ago. My friend was a respected sound technician, mixer and editor until this diagnosis. He is only 50 years old and has had an extensive career in his field in music, film and television. He explained to me that since there are relatively few people stricken with the disease, there is little funding going to research because the drug companies would be hard pressed to recover their investment. Coincidentally, a very good friend of my brother¹s was also stricken with this horrible disease just recently”

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain, through the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. ALS causes progressive degeneration of motor neurons, which effects the brain’s ability to initiate and control muscle movement. With voluntary muscle action severely limited, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. Essentially, the body degrades while the mind stays sharp and aware. It is a very cruel and frightening way to die.

Please join us in supporting the fight against ALS and bid on this wonderful and unique Firefly item. 100% of the winning bid will be donated to The ALS Association.

    Year of Equality Now

In 2005, a dedicated group of fans came together to promote Joss Whedon’s upcoming movie Serenity, their reward for years of faith that Firefly could live on. Empowered by the return of the ‘verse, the fans knew they could do more, and chose to also raise money for Equality Now, an organization working to end violence against girls and women around the world.

Their hard work carried on through the years, spurred on by charitable work, inspiring others to follow their lead. This included the formation of the California Browncoats, Inc (CABC). We keep working to direct the power of our fandom toward raising awareness and money for charities. Thanks to the generous support of the Browncoat community, we’ve been able to raise over $100,000 for charities like Equality Now, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation, Kids Need to Read, and Waterkeeper Alliance.

To celebrate the upcoming 5-year anniversary of Serenity and Browncoat fan tables at California pop culture conventions, CABC would like to take a moment today to announce their plans to make 2010 the Year of Equality Now.

Each fund-raising event CABC hosts in 2010 will support Equality Now and its vital mission. We look forward to a year filled with the energy, determination and positive effect on our world that is a significant part of being a Browncoat. No power in the ‘verse can stop us.

“We need equality. Kinda now.” – Joss Whedon

All this and your final chance to hang out with the Browncoats before any last minute shopping and the end of the convention.

    Freebies!

We don’t want you to walk away from our tables empty handed (besides all the swag you purchase). That means we’ve got another free item you can pick up when you stop by and visit. This item will be in limited supply and given out at random times every day. But really, is it a bad thing stopping by multiple times during the convention?

    “Jayne Hat” Flash Mob

Walk down the street and show everyone you’re not afraid of anything. Stop by the booth and ask a staff member for top secret information on how to join the Jayne Hat Flash Mob. All you will need is a few spare minutes, a Jayne Hat, and the fearlessness to wear such a cunning hat. Details will only be released on a need to know basis. Don’t worry if you miss one or don’t have a Jayne Hat yet, we’ll be mobbing daily and have some hats available for sale at the booth.

    After Hours Browncoat Meet-up

We know it’s crazy and hectic every day at Comic-Con, and that you just want to rest and hang out with friends at night. We’ve researched the surrounding area and found a perfect spot for meeting up with other Browncoats. On Thursday, Friday ,and Saturday night, you’ll be able to find Browncoats relaxing and looking to meet others with the same love of the ‘verse in a pre-arranged spot. We’ll be meeting at the Marriott next door to the convention, at the seating area in front of DW’s Irish Pub. After you enter the Marriott, turn left toward the South Tower. Pass the gift shop, Hertz and Starbucks. DW’s will be on your left. Look for the tables with “Browncoat Friendly” signs and have fun!

You’ll also be able to pick up a handy little invite with these directions at our tables.

This meeting spot is also a perfect chance for locals not going to Comic-Con to meet the Browncoats invading their town.

Stay Tuned to this page for more announcements!

    Comic-Con 2008: Charity

The California Browncoats are proud to support The Kids Need to Read Foundation with our fundraiser at Comic-Con this year. In addition to taking donations for KNTR, we will be selling a Limited Edition of Serenity: Better Days #1 with an exclusive cover only available from CABC at Comic-Con.

The Kids Need to Read Foundation is a non-profit organization established in August 2007 by The Softwire series author PJ Haarsma and actor Nathan Fillion. Their mission statement is to purchase and provide books to libraries, schools, and other institutions in need. They also act to foster a love of reading in all children, encourage reading among reluctant readers, and look for new ideas to encourage childhood literacy. KNTR accomplishes their mission by hosting eBay auctions, selling literacy-themed and “Kindness is a Strength” items, and various other fundraising activities. They then use those funds to buy books from an official book list that includes a variety of well-reviewed books for children and teens.

For more information on Kids Need to Read, visit their site, community, Myspace, or Facebook.

PJ Haarsma & Nathan Fillion - Kids Need to Read Kids Need to Read

“When I first traveled across North America to promote The Softwire, my initial excitement quickly turned to dismay when I witnessed the lack of book funds available to schools and libraries. Children would follow me into the parking lot after my presentation begging for a book they couldn’t afford while teachers and librarians scrambled to find funds for even a single copy. I came across many a teacher who took the money out of his/her own pocket just so the kids could have the book in their library. It was this disturbing trend that prompted me to establish the Kids Need to Read project as a way to fight back. It is our dream to fill library shelves with great books so that no child lacks for amazing stories to inspire their imaginations.” – PJ Haarsma, Author

“Growing up, my parents managed to show me the importance of reading without cramming it down my throat. A difficult task, I’m sure. It breaks my heart to think that there are kids out there, ready to have their imaginations lit on fire, excited and wanting to read, and facing naked shelves in their school or local libraries. Rather than complain or wait till the system stops failing our nation’s children, this is a matter I feel we must take into our own hands. There are children, right now, waiting— wanting to read. What shall we tell them? I support Kids Need To Read because it fosters a desire to learn, the process of self-improvement, and the chance for children’s minds to grow. What will you do?” – Nathan Fillion, Actor

CABC Silent Auction on the Browncoat Cruise raises $1,750 for Wooten Center

The California Browncoats are proud to announce that the silent auction we ran during the Browncoat Cruise raised $1,750 for The Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center. 200 Browncoats from around the world travelled the seas and donated to a worthy cause. The total amount raised was not only received from the silent auction winnings, but from other attendees who donated during the cruise, and in the following weeks.

Ron Glass was a special guest on the cruise and he saw first hand just how generous and giving Browncoats can be. We would like to thank everyone who bid in the auction, the winning bidders, all those who donated, and the companies who donated prizes.

A complete list of auction items, winning bidders and amounts can be found on our Browncoat Cruise page (coming soon).
