The California Browncoats will be running two games during WonderCon 2013 and giving folk a chance to win some really cool stuff.

We will have a prize drawing game each day of the convention, with three prize packs being awarded each day. Some of the shiny stuff you could win by entering our prize drawing include:

The Malcolm Reynolds Metal-Plated Pistol Replica. Produced by QMx, this replica was created using a mold of the original stunt pistol carried by Nathan Fillion. And because we love our fellow Browncoats so much, we’re giving away two of these bad boys!

An awesome Serenity ornament. These things are pretty cool in their own right, but we got a few people to autograph the box for you. Signatures on this include Jane Espenson, Ron Glass, Sean Maher, Yan & Rafael Feldman (Fanty/Mingo), Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Will Conrad, Shawna Trpcic, Alan Tudyk, Brett Matthews, Nathan Fillion, Mark Sheppard, Jose Molina, and Ben Edlund.

Plus some other stuff to round out the prize packages.

We will also be hosting a trivia game. Test your knowledge of Firefly and Serenity. The rules are simple: We’ll ask you a trivia question, if you get it right, you get to pick something from our bucket of prizes. Get it wrong, and you get the good feeling of donating to Equality Now. Some of the prizes for the trivia contest include:

Autographed headshots from Firefly/Serenity and other cool SciFi shows
St Jude collectible mugs
Limited edition 57th Overlanders Dog Tags
T-Shirts
Amazon gift cards
Comics and books
And other shiny goodness

So, if you’re attending WonderCon please stop by Booth 1286 in Hall B. All proceeds will go to Equality Now.
Keep Flying!

Assuming control of tables A7/A8 in the San Diego Convention Center, The California Browncoats hit the ground running for another great con and the ten year anniversary of our favorite show. Continuing what we started at WonderCon 2012, we once again focused our support on The Trevor Project, the charity chosen by Sean Maher and Jane Espenson. The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth, and we were honored to raise $8,000 for this worthwhile cause!

After spending a few months preparing (including a pretty solid weekend right before the con), the Browncoats hit the convention floor in force bright and early on Wednesday morning to build our outpost. It takes a lot of time and effort to build our booth, and it’s always amazing to watch the progress from two tables and an empty backdrop into the finished product. Thanks to all the volunteers who came and helped out, we couldn’t get it done without you.

Preview night was a resounding success and set the tone for the remainder of the con. Based on the traffic during preview night, we figured we were going to have a busy convention and the attendees did not disappoint.

On Thursday, we hosted signings by Adam Levermore, Jamie Chambers, and Team Unicorn reported for our first signings of the convention. Lots of folks stopped by to visit and everyone had a lot of fun chatting with them.

We hosted some after hours fun on Thursday with our screening of Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog. Before the screening, we held a costume contest judged by Shawna Trpcic, the costume designer from the show. You can see some video of the event at http://youtu.be/4tnyxz8HEys

Although not an official signer this year, Mark Sheppard stopped by the booth for a few minutes and then sent people to the booth to make donations throughout the rest of the convention. Thanks Mark!

On Saturday, Tim Minear, Shawna Trpcic, and Jane Espenson all stopped by the booth to meet fans and sign stuff. We had a lot of fun listening to stories about Firefly and projects that they are all working on now.

Later on Saturday, our good friend Marian Call stopped by the booth to meet fans, sell CDs, and sign stuff. She then turned around and donated 100% of her CD sales at the booth to charity! How cool is that?

On Sunday, NY Times best selling writer Mira Grant (AKA Seanan McGuire) signed and gave away tons of books. If you haven’t checked out San Diego 2014: The Last Stand of the California Browncoats, you really should.

In all, CABC raised and donated the following amounts to these super charities:

The Trevor Project - $8,000.00
Equality Now – $2,500
St. Jude’s – $500.00
Kids Need to Read – $500.00

Next up: Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo, September 15th-16th, Los Angeles Convention Center. If you’re planning on attending and are interested in helping us out, drop a line to volunteer@californiabrowncoats.org and let us know. We can use help setting up, tearing down, and running the booth for both days of the convention.

We know that some folks want to volunteer but do not know their con schedules yet. Don’t worry, the form will stay up until after Comic Con has posted the con schedule.

CA Browncoats relies on volunteers to work the booth. You’ll have fun, and you never know who will end up stopping by.

If you’re interested in volunteering, please fill out the form at the above link. We try to get the schedule out about a week before the con, depending on when Comic Con posts their schedule.

Don’t worry if you’ve never worked at something like this in the past, we’ll show you the ropes and we always try to pair new folks up with people that have worked the booth a few times.

Please note: This is NOT a form to volunteer to work for Comic Con International. That is a completely separate process, and the registration to volunteer to work for Comic Con International is closed (http://www.comic-con.org/cci/cci_vol.php). This is for folks who have a ticket to Comic Con and are interested in helping us raise money for charity.

Sign up or review messages at http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/CABCVolunteers/ for more information.
