Castle Convention, Los Angeles, CA 12 NOV 2011
CABC teamed up with CastleTV.net to provide some “boots on the ground” help to the Castle Con in Los Angeles, CA. Seamus Dever (Detective Kevin Ryan), Jon Huertas (Detective Javier Esposito), Andrew Marlowe (Creator, Executive Producer, Writer), & Terri Miller (Producer, Writer) were in attendance, helping the con raise over $15,000 for worthy charities. CABC helped with ticket sales and event logistics.

For more information on the event, please visit http://castleconvention.com/

COMIKAZE, Los Angeles, CA 5-6 NOV 2011
CABC ran a booth at the inaugural COMIKAZE convention in Los Angeles in November and had a great time. This was a low key con, not a lot of big media or Hollywood influence, We sold some merchandise, took in some donations, played a few twitter games, and a great time was had by all. We’re already making plans to attend the 2012 event in September. For more information , visit http://comikazeexpo.com/

ComicCon International, San Diego, CA 20-24 JUL 2011

Maintaining our hold on tables A7/A8 in the corner, CABC once again landed in San Diego for our premier annual event. CABC teamed up with Browncoats Redemption to support Equality Now, The Dyslexia Foundation, The Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center, Kids Need to Read, & Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation. Our exclusive Shiny pint glass was a huge hit, we ran though our allotted numbers very early each day.

In a Comic Con first, our Dr Horrible screening was shut down temporarily for excessive bouncing during the Bad Horse Chorus. Turns out that 2,000 people all bouncing in time do some interesting things to the structural integrity of a building. After a brief discussion with the Fire Marshall and a quick announcement to the crowd, the show was allowed to go on. Future shows will be just like wonderflonium: DO NOT BOUNCE.

As always, thanks to everyone who stopped by the booth.

WonderCon, San Francisco, CA 1-3 APR 2011

We ran a single table for the 2011 Wonder Con convention this year. Quarters were a little tight, but we still managed to sell merch, take donations, and play the every popular chopstick pull game for charity. We’ll be taking a break from San Francisco as the 2012 convention will be held in Anaheim; we’re all hoping this is a temporary thing, we’re going to miss our Bay Area friends.

ComicCon International, San Diego, CA 2010

Located once again at tables A7/A8, we raised funds for Equality Now with donations and prize drawings and also our exclusive RuMe brand reusable shopping bag. Our special guests were Nancy & Belle Holder, Camden Toy, Marian Call, Jamie Chambers, Shawna Trpcic, Jane Espenson, Jose Molina, Brett Matthews, Ben Edlund, PJ Haarsma, and Nathan Fillion. We also continued our traditions of a Dr. Horrible’s Singalong Blog screening and a Jayne Hat Flash Mob, plus we hosted a screening for Can’t Stop The Serenity.

ComicCon International, San Diego, CA 2009

Back at tables A7/A8, we raised funds for The Waterkeeper Alliance. This organization has been supported by several Firefly and Serenity cast members, so we decided to make ComicCon 2009 about Keeping Earth That Is From Becoming Earth That Was. We also sold an exclusive reusable water bottle with proceeds benefitting the charity. The Jayne Hat Flash Mob returned with a much better turnout than the first year, and we had a very successful screening of Dr. Horrible’s Singalong Blog, complete with callbacks that we created for the program. We also had several guests throughout the weekend, including Nathan Fillion and PJ Haarsma making a surprise visit to our meeting room.

ComicCon International, San Diego, CA 2008

At tables A7/A8, we raised funds for Kids Need to Read, the charity co-founded by Nathan Fillion. With the help of several sponsors, we created a Limited Edition of Serenity: Better Days #1 with an exclusive cover, with all proceeds benefitting KNTR. We also staged our first Jayne Hat Flash Mob, and while very few people in cunning hats attended, it did provide brainstorming ideas for future attempts. Plus we helped promote a new webseries as we shared our booth with Felicia Day and the cast of The Guild.

Mira Grant (aka Seanan McGuire, NY Times bestselling author and winner of the 2010 John W. Campbell Award for best new writer) has offered to “Tuckerize” two (2) undead winners in her upcoming novella “San Diego 2014: The Final stand of the California Browncoats”

The two (2) spots will be auctioned off via eBay in order to raise money for Equality Now. There will be TWO auctions! The first auction starts November 15th and ends November 25th. The second auction starts November 20th and ends on November 30th.

Keep an eye out here and on CABC’s Twitter.

The first auction is at Tuckerization Auction 1.

The second auction is at Tuckerization Auction 2.

Tuckerization rules:

The name of the recipient of the Tuckerization will be used in the story. In the case of a highly recognizable name, or a name that the recipient would prefer not to be used in fiction, an agreed-upon alternative may be used.

The basic physical apperance of the recipient will be used in the story

Unless the recipient specifically requests a villainous arc, they will be presented positively by the author

Because this is a zombie story, there are no guarentees made as to the survival of any character, whether or not they are based on a living person. the recipient can make suggestions as to the nature of their character’s death, but these may or may not be used.

Only willing participants will be written into the story. you can bid on a tuckerization for a friend only if that friend consents to the terms above. you cannot use a tuckerization to kill off an enemy.

In the event that San Diego 2014 is published in a physical format, the author will provide the California Browncoats with two (2) copies of the finished book, to be delivered to the recipients of the Tuckerizations at the organizations’s discretion.

Comic-Con is the biggest geek gathering in America and every year we try to give you something special for stopping by the Browncoat booth and donating to charity. This year, we’re going to have two all new exclusives!

Shiny! Pint Glass

First up is our shiny new pint glass. Literally. Produced by the California Browncoats in a very limited run, you can get this exclusive 15 oz. pint glass for a $8.00 donation to The Dyslexia Foundation. The Dyslexia Foundation is supported by Jewel Staite, and we felt this particular item would remind you both of her, and our favorite Firefly mechanic, Kaylee. Get yours quick, there are only 99 available.

Firefrog Print

Our next exclusive is an out of this world mash-up. Recent Browncoat and Relentlessly Cheerful Artist James Hance has done this awesome Firefrog print just for Comic-Con. It features your favorite Firefly class ship Serenity and its crew mashed into the Muppet world. This 8×10 heavy cardstock print is limited to only 200 copies and can be yours for a $10.00 donation. We’re going to send 100% of that donation split equally to all 5 charities we are supporting at Comic-Con this year. That means you can walk away with a cool exclusive and $2.00 will go to each of this year’s charities: Equality Now, Kids Need to Read, Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation, The Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center, and The Dyslexia Foundation. That makes this a win-win situation, and we all know Mal…er…Kermit…uh…The Captain likes to win!

These exclusives won’t stick around long, and when they’re gone, there won’t be any more produced. Hurry on over to tables A7/A8 and get yours!

Final Update: We are proud to announce that CSTS Los Angeles raised $11,000 for Equality Now. The actual amount raised after expenses was just under $11,000, so the California Browncoats board added the last bit to get to a nice round number. A huge thank you to all the hard work of our volunteers, to our tireless and inspiring lead organizer Therese Magnani, to all the attendees and their generous donations, to ComicCenter for broadcasting the event, to all our wonderful sponsors, and to the special guests who spent time with us that night.
